Religious, Spiritual & Chaplaincy Services for Children
Our chaplains are available around the clock to talk with you and your child, respond to prayer requests, and perform religious services, including baptism and anointing of the sick. These services are provided by NYU Langone and supported in part by the Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.
You and your family are also invited to visit our meditation room, a quiet place for prayer or other spiritual practices.
Role of the Hospital Chaplain
A chaplain is a clergy member who works for a nonreligious organization, such as a hospital. Chaplains are trained to counsel people of different faiths. Some of our chaplains are also ordained as Jewish rabbis or Catholic priests.
The hospital chaplain is available to meet the spiritual needs of the entire family. Chaplains help parents who need extra support after their child has received a diagnosis or prognosis. They also help those whose children are dealing with chronic illness and ongoing medical treatment. During this time, it’s common for parents to feel alone and overwhelmed by new and complex emotions. Chaplains offer empathy, and they can talk with you about any spiritual struggles you are experiencing.
Chaplains can provide support for infants and toddlers through prayer and religious services. Children who are older might ask questions such as, “Why is this happening so me?” or “Why aren’t my prayers being answered?” They might struggle with feelings of fear, blame, and guilt. Our chaplains can talk to your child about these spiritual issues and provide guidance to you about how to talk to your child about these topics.
Chaplains help people of all faiths as well as those who do not have a religious tradition but are seeking spiritual support. Our chaplains are all board certified or are eligible for certification, a distinction that requires 2,000 hours of clinical work as well as advanced theological training.
If you have an urgent need, please ask your child’s nurse to request a visit from the hospital chaplain. If you would like to schedule a visit or request a prayer, you can use our online form.
We also provide religious, spiritual, and chaplaincy services for adults.
