Palliative Care for Children
When your child has a serious illness, we at Hassenfeld Children's Hospital of New York at NYU Langone know that helping him or her deal with the related symptoms, pain, and stress is foremost on your mind. That’s why we have a team of specialists dedicated to improving your child’s quality of life and providing the support your entire family needs during this challenging time. These services are offered through the Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.
Palliative care is available to children of any age who are affected by serious medical conditions, including genetic disorders, cancer, prematurity, neurologic disorders, heart disease, and lung conditions.
The goal of palliative care is to ease the symptoms that are adding to your child’s distress and discomfort. These may include pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, anxiety, and trouble sleeping.
“It is unique that we have a group of people whose sole purpose it is to look at partnering with families and patients in traditionally hidden areas of medicine. They are making it part of the discussion at all levels.”
—Arun Chopra, MD
Division Director, Pediatric Critical Care
We also address social and emotional issues that may affect the entire family, including improving communication among family members and between the family and the medical team. In addition, we ensure that your family’s values and traditions are respected and participate in discussions about care goals and options.
Our team consists of certified pediatric palliative care doctors, licensed clinical social workers, a nurse practitioner, a chaplain, and child life specialist. Palliative care can be received at home, during a doctor’s office visit, or while in the hospital. This care does not disrupt any other treatment your child is receiving for his or her condition.
If you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment with the pediatric palliative care team, please have your child’s doctor call 646-501-0360 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We also provide palliative care services for adults at NYU Langone.
