Family Advisory Council
Members of the Family Advisory Council use their experience as the parents and loved ones of pediatric patients to help improve the care experience at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital of New York at NYU Langone.
With support from the Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care, the Family Advisory Council meets monthly to discuss topics of interest with physicians, nurses, social workers, and leadership of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital.
The Family Perspective on Caring for Children
Family advisors use their firsthand perspective to contribute ideas and suggestions for ways to improve the care experience for pediatric patients. They also have helped improve patient safety and discharge planning, as well as helped enhance communication between patients and staff during stressful times.
“Having family advisors be part of the quality work that is being done has been helpful and has provided great insight to our teams.”
—Jacquelyn Fuller, BSN, RN, CPN, IIWCC-NYU
Nurse Manager, Pediatric Critical Care
The Family Advisory Council provides valuable insight into ways technology can be used to improve the experience for children and families. One example is MyChart Bedside, which is a tablet computer that gives parents easy access to their child’s medical records and care plan. The Family Advisory Council collaborates on MyChart Bedside content and develops tips to teach families how to use the technology.
Family to Family Hours
Family advisors provide peer support and respite to parents during Family to Family Hours, which are held weekly in various patient areas throughout Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital.
These events give parents of children undergoing care the opportunity to speak with parents whose families have encountered similar challenges. Family advisors can also briefly take your place at your child’s bedside, so you can have some time for yourself. Special events, including forums on topics such as improving the medical experience for your child or how to handle financial issues, are also held regularly.
Family to Family Hour events vary by area of the hospital.
