About Me

I was born in New York City and have lived here my whole life, except for my years on active duty as a Lieutenant Commander with the Medical Corps of the United States Navy, following my surgical residency. I returned to join the surgical faculty of NYU Langone as a clinical fellow of the American Cancer Society.

My practice and research have focused on surgery as part of the multidisciplinary treatment of cancers, including breast cancer, malignant melanoma, and thyroid cancer, as well as thyroid and parathyroid disease. I have integrated advances in molecular biology and genetic analysis when planning surgery. 

I have been a principal investigator of the National Cancer Institute Multicenter Sentinel Lymphadenectomy Trial, which has led to sentinel node biopsy as a standard of care for patients with malignant melanoma and breast cancer. I direct the Shifrin-Myers Breast Cancer Discovery Fund and the Cancer Surgery Research Fund. I have also served as New York State chairman of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons and as president of the New York Surgical Society.  

I received the Solomon A. Berson Alumni Achievement Award in Clinical Science from the NYU School of Medicine, the Excellence in Medicine Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund, the Physician of the Year Award from the Rambam Medical Center in Israel, and the Humanitarian Award from the Melanoma Research Foundation. In addition, both the Manhattan Breast Cancer Awareness Award and the Gender Equity Award from the American Women’s Medical Association have recognized my dedication to women’s health. 

It is often said that to practice good medicine, one has to teach good medicine. NYU Langone has given me this opportunity. I am honored to have been the recipient of the Great Teacher Award from New York University and a five-time recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award from the NYU School of Medicine.  

Above all, I have been honored to be at an institution that enables me to deliver compassionate, state-of-the-art medical care, and which honors its mission to advance medicine through research and education. I have worked with inspiring mentors and continue to work with outstanding colleagues. But my patients—with their determination and dedication—have always been my greatest source of inspiration.
