Our Approach to Treating

Hypothyroidism

At NYU Langone, our endocrinologists provide expert management of hypothyroidism, a condition that results when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of a hormone called thyroxine. This hormone helps regulate metabolism, as well as your heart rate and body temperature. Having low levels of thyroxine can make you gain weight, have trouble concentrating, and feel constantly tired.

At NYU Langone’s Thyroid Unit, endocrinologists provide you with personalized care. Treatment for hypothyroidism is often lifelong. Our doctors are committed to helping you control symptoms as quickly as possible.

Specialists at NYU Langone's Hassenfeld Children's Hospital diagnose and treat congenital hypothyroidism in children.

Treatment for Hypothyroidism

Most people with hypothyroidism are treated with a synthetic hormone called levothyroxine. It is important that you see your doctor on a regular basis, so he or she can adjust the medication dosage based on any changes in your symptoms.
