Recovery & Support for Bursitis & Tendinitis

Most people recover fully from bursitis or tendinitis under the care of our orthopedic specialists. To build muscle strength and flexibility and to help prevent another injury from occurring, doctors at NYU Langone recommend physical therapy after inflammation and pain has receded or after recovery from surgery. Our experts also offer programs and services to enhance your overall sense of well-being, which may help you heal faster.

Physical Therapy

Whether you pursue medical or surgical treatment to relieve symptoms, physical therapy is an important part of recovery from bursitis or tendinitis. Physical therapists who specialize in orthopedic injuries at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation customize a recovery plan based on the severity of symptoms, the extent of the injury, and the type of treatment.

A physical therapist can show you how to use physical movements to rebuild strength in affected muscles and tendons, increase flexibility, and restore range of motion. Our physical therapists may recommend stretching and strengthening exercises at first, gradually adding weight-bearing exercises. After four to eight weeks, some people may slowly return to the physical activity that led to bursitis or tendinitis. Others may need more physical therapy before muscles and tendons are strong enough for vigorous physical activity.

Physical therapists assess your progress after four to eight weeks and determine if you might benefit from additional therapy. Often, therapists create a simple exercise routine that you can perform at home.

Mind–Body Wellness

NYU Langone offers therapies such as acupressure, acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation to relieve pain and reduce stress. Acupuncture and acupressure involve the use of massage or very thin needles to stimulate specific points on the body, which enhances blood flow and may speed healing.

Tai chi is an ancient form of exercise that consists of a series of simple body movements held for varying periods. Tai chi is a low impact activity, and most routines move at a slow, graceful pace, emphasizing mental focus, physical balance, and calmness. Many people find that tai chi boosts energy, reduces stress, and improves strength.

Meditation is a form of deep relaxation that has been used by people all over the world for centuries. During group meditation sessions at NYU Langone, people usually sit quietly with their eyes closed, allowing the mind to focus on remaining still. Many people find that meditation helps restore emotional balance, reduce stress, and boost energy.
